We are proud to partner with the AKO Foundation on Girl-Led Action on Climate Change (GLACC), a programme that empowers girls and young women to lead climate action and shape more resilient futures.

Girls and young women are disproportionately affected by climate change, yet are largely excluded from the policies formulated to address it. When extreme weather disrupts harvests, it is often girls who drop out of school to help their families. When flooding damages infrastructure, it is women and girls who bear the greatest burden. Climate-related crises also threaten their health, from increased risks of malnutrition and waterborne diseases to reduced access to reproductive and mental health services. Ignoring these impacts and the solutions that girls and women can contribute to is impeding progress and wasting precious time to tackle the climate crisis.

GLACC is an important part of the solution, supporting both adaptive and mitigative measures against climate change, and critically building the capacity of girls and women to take on leadership roles in their countries’ climate responses. The programme equips participants with knowledge of climate change and its gender dimensions, practical skills to adapt to its effects, and the confidence to advocate for change in their communities and beyond.

Thanks to the support of AKO Foundation, we have trained 276 national trainers and 1,988 leaders to deliver the curriculum in their communities, working with 24 Member Organisations across Africa, Asia Pacific, and Latin America and the Caribbean. To date, 105,960 girls and young women have completed the programme, going on to share what they have learned with 739,757 community members. The ripple effect of that knowledge spreading through families and neighbourhoods is at the heart of what this programme set out to achieve.

“Connecting girls’ education and skills development with climate change is critical to our ability to succeed in the fight against climate change, and to leave behind a liveable planet for future generations. The AKO Foundation is delighted to be supporting this project, which will enable Girl Guides and Girl Scouts to learn about and take action on climate change, leading to a lasting impact on many generations to come.”
