Together, they are launching the Girls for Green Energy programme, an initiative designed to empower girls and young women, aged 8 to 18, with the knowledge, skills and mindsets to lead the way in climate action and the global energy transition.

At the heart of this initiative is a bold vision: to harness the power of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) to shape a more sustainable world. Through a dynamic mix of interactive gaming, hands-on learning, and community-driven action, Girls for Green Energy aims to spark curiosity, build critical skills, and empower girls to see themselves as changemakers in the fight against climate change.

The programme combines Siemens Energy’s ‘Planet Rescuers’—an engaging Minecraft Education game covering renewable energy, clean technologies, and climate action—with WAGGGS’ reflective learning activities and ‘Take Action’ projects, where girls will identify local sustainability challenges and develop real-world solutions.

By presenting these disciplines within a social context focused on environmental stewardship, the programme aims to help participants discover the potential of STEM to drive positive change in the world, aligning with their own aspirations.

“Girls for Green Energy aims to ignite an interest and offer new perspectives on sustainability by learning through gaming and the application of STEM subject matter. Our goal is for girls to feel empowered and passionate to take the lead in building a sustainable world driven by STEM knowledge, skills and mindsets, which is one of the ways to achieve WAGGGS’ vision of an equal world where all girls can thrive.”, said Candela Gonzalez, Chair, World Board, WAGGGS.

“Today’s energy transformation hinges on innovation. It’s not just about meeting rising demand; it’s about ensuring a sustainable future. Let us empower women to seize the job opportunities that will shape this new era,” said Melanie Forbrick, Head of Energy4Good, Siemens Energy’s societal engagement program.

This partnership will initially roll out in Asia, with collaboration from WAGGGS Member Organisations in Taiwan, Singapore, and Hong Kong. An estimate of 420 girls will participate in the pilot phase, supported by adult and peer leaders.

By equipping girls and young women with essential knowledge and skills, this initiative aims to inspire informed decision-making and meaningful action. Our goal is to empower these future leaders to become catalysts for change in their communities, paving the way for a sustainable future—aligning perfectly with this year’s theme, Women and Girls in Science: Leadership for a New Era of Sustainability.
