This November a team of 7 Girl Guides and Girl Scouts will attend the world’s largest climate change event, Conference of the Parties, or COP. They will represent 10 million girls in 153 countries.

Each year world leaders meet to discuss climate change at Conference Of the Parties, or COP. This year is COP28 and will take place from 30 November until 12 December at the Expo City, Dubai. It will notably be framed by the vision of the COP28 Presidency described in its letter to the Parties, and take into account the Climate Action Pathways, the Breakthrough Agenda, and the Sharm El Sheikh Adaptation Agenda , in order to drive the systemic transformations needed in every thematic area to fulfill the Paris Agreement.

At COP21 in 2015, the world agreed to limit global warming to 1.5°C compared to pre-industrial levels by 2050. To remain on target, science tells us that emissions must be halved by 2030. We only have another seven years to meet that goal. Keeping in mind the urgency of the issue and how young people, particularly girls and young women, across the globe are disproportionately affected by the climate crisis, the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) is sending 7 girls to the conference through its “Girl-Led Action on Climate Change” Programme (GLACC).

WAGGGS believes that girls and young women must participate at all levels of decision making and, in the design, delivery and implementation of all relevant environmental programmes, in order to shape a sustainable and equal future for us all. COP28 is an opportunity for WAGGGS to give girls a space to speak out, share their concerns and their key demands to the international community.

WAGGGS attended the last COP event in Egypt in 2022, where delegates from África, Latin América and Caribbean made their voices heard.

Meet our 2023 delegates and learn more about their motivation for participation!
