With the support of the Lead Volunteers, you could be one of our:

Volunteer Interpreters:

Volunteer interpreters are key to the success of conferences, training and meetings at all levels, as they become a language bridge to help participants communicate, facilitating the verbal communication of all the parties involved. Professional interpreters are especially encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities:

  • To provide consecutive and simultaneous interpretation while ensuring that the quality of the interpretation is adequate and respectful.
  • To provide clear and concise verbal communication/interpretation, interfacing between different parties.
  • To act as a team player and facilitate teamwork.
  • To learn and share knowledge and encourage the learning of others.

Volunteer Translators:

Volunteer translators make sure that our written materials are accessible in the four official languages of WAGGGS. They translate a wide range of documents, including programme materials, emails, social media posts, website content and other resources. There are engaging projects available to suit all preferences. Professional translators are especially encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities:

  • To keep track of translations and maintain copies of the translated materials.
  • To deliver translations on time and properly reviewed.
  • To act as a team player and facilitate teamwork.
  • To learn and share knowledge and encourage the learning of others.

Volunteer Proof-readers:

Proofreaders provide the quality assessment element of the translation/publication process. As well as being charged with ensuring that translations reflect the original idea and intent of the document creator, they are also responsible for checking the accuracy, consistency and fluency of written documents of all types.

Responsibilities:

  • To proofread translations/texts, make sure they use proper grammar, spelling, register, etc. in the target language.
  • To deliver the edited documents on time.
  • To act as a team player and facilitate teamwork.
  • To learn and share knowledge and encourage the learning of others.

Preferred experience, skills, or certifications:

Language:

  • Fluency (native speaker or equivalent) in English, Arabic, French, or Spanish [Target language] AND degree level (or equivalent) in at least one other of English, Arabic, French or Spanish [Source language].

IT:

  • Knowledge of Microsoft applications: Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • A stable Internet connection (particularly for interpreting).
  • Tech curious, willing to learn how to use new platforms.

Personal abilities

  • Have experience or an interest in translation/interpreting/proofreading.
  • Possess communication skills.
  • Speak clearly and with confidence.
  • Write clearly, using proper grammar and spelling.
  • Pay close attention to detail.
  • Be a quick thinker.
  • Be able to cope with pressure.

What will we expect from you?

  • Commit to volunteering with us for one year.
  • Perform your volunteer role to the best of your ability.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of information from WAGGGS and its Member Organisations.
  • Read and comply with WAGGGS policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Attend any training relevant to your role.
  • Act professionally when representing WAGGGS.
  • Raise any concerns at the earliest opportunity.
  • Give us as much notice as possible should you be unable to attend an event or decide not to carry out your volunteer role with us anymore.
