Development of the Movement

Scouting was first introduced in Palestine in 1912 with support from the government. The movement first gained international recognition in 1928 and continued to grow across Palestine until the revolution began in 1936. In 1944, the movement became independent from the government in Palestine. When many Palestinian people were displaced in the wake of war in 1948, Scouts continued to establish groups and activities in Palestinian camps.

In 1964, the Palestinian Arab Scout Association brought together the existing Marine Scout Association, Para Scout Association, Land Scout Association (Boys), and the Girl Guides Association. Together, the organisations worked to bring the Guide and Scout Movement to girls and boys across the Gaza Strip until 1967.

In 1970, the Palestinian Scout and Girl Guide Association was formed. It has continued to grow and develop as an organisation throughout Palestine ever since. The Scouts and Guides are one organisation in Palestine, but the universally recognised name is the Palestinian Scout Association. Based in Ramallah, the organisation includes all public and school Guide and Scout groups and bands within the Ministry of Education.

The Palestinian Scout Association became a full member of WAGGGS at the 36th World Conference in India, 2017.
