Periods and the COVID-19 pandemic

May 28, 2020

WAGGGS and WASH United organised a U-Report poll for Menstrual Hygiene Day, on May 28 2020, to understand the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on girls and young women's menstrual hygiene and management.

This was during a period of peak lockdown for many around the world, with 3,910 girls and young women from 160 countries responding to the poll.

We discovered that because of the impact of the pandemic, 1 in 4 were finding it harder to manage their periods and that 51% reported having less money to buy the menstrual materials they need.

It is clear that much more needs to be done to support girls and women with their menstrual health, from period education to the provision of free menstrual products and safe toilets.

At WAGGGS, we will continue to advocate for better periods for all and educate and advocate on menstruation through ‘Rosie’s World’, an educational programme specially adapted to be delivered by our Member Organisations in sub-Saharan Africa.

Spread the word:

With many countries around the world facing new lockdowns and curfews, please share the results.
Periods don't stop for pandemics, and neither should our support!

A massive thanks to all Girl Guides and Girl Scouts who participated in our #MHDay2020 poll.

Your voice matters!
