Development of the Movement
Guiding began sponataneously in many parts of Australia from 1911 onwards. Soon after the end of the First World War in 1918, each state established its own organization and headquarters. In 1926, a Federal Council was formed linking the states together as the Girl Guides Association of Australia. In 1928, Australia became a founder member of WAGGGS. The constitution was amended in 1958 to include an Australian executive, which enabled Australia to act as a national body. The Association was incorporated in 1980. Following a strategic review in 1994, the name, programme philosophy and training system were revamped. The new name, Guides Australia, was registered in 1996.
