Development of the Movement

In 1915, Jamaica’s first Guide company was formed in Spanish Town, Saint Catherine. In 1916, the first camp was held and three years later a Ranger unit was started. Jamaica became a full member of WAGGGS in 1966 as a part of the Western Hemisphere Region, and in 1967, the Girl Guides Association of Jamaica was registered as a non-profit company limited by guarantee.

In 2010, Jamaica celebrated 100 years of Girl Guiding and 100 years of Brownie Guiding in 2017. In 2019, Jamaica will celebrate 100 years of Ranger Guiding. These achievements have formed a solid foundation for the Associations active movement of girls and young women, and creates a rich future for Guiding in Jamaica.
