Development of the Movement

The history of Girl Guiding in Curaçao dates back to 1930, when Girlguiding was introduced on the island as part of the Nederlandse Padvindsters Gilde (NPG), the Dutch Girl Guides organization.

On 30 May 1930, the first Guide was formally invested. This date is regarded as the official beginning of organized Girl Guiding in Curaçao.

From NPG to PNA.
The development of Girl Guiding took place within the constitutional history of the Netherlands Antilles. Originally, the Netherlands Antilles consisted of six islands: Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao, Sint Maarten, Sint Eustatius and Saba.

In 1977, the organization changed its name from the Nederlandse Padvindsters Gilde (NPG) to Padvindsters Vereniging van de Nederlandse Antillen (PNA). This change reflected the organization’s growing identity and position within the Netherlands Antilles.

On 1 January 1986, Aruba obtained its Status Aparte and left the Netherlands Antilles. The Netherlands Antilles subsequently continued with five islands: Curaçao, Bonaire, Sint Maarten, Sint Eustatius and Saba. During this period, the organization continued under the
name PNA.

From PNA to AGPNA
On 10 October 2010, the Netherlands Antilles was dissolved. Curaçao and Sint Maarten became autonomous countries within the Kingdom of the Netherlands, while Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba became public entities of the Netherlands.

As the Netherlands Antilles no longer existed as a constitutional entity, the name Padvindsters Vereniging van de Nederlandse Antillen (PNA) was no longer appropriate. As an interim measure, and to ensure continuity in programme delivery, leadership development and international Guiding commitments, the organization adopted the name Asosiashon di Guia PNA (AGPNA).

From AGPNA to AGC

Over time, it became increasingly clear that continued reference to the former Netherlands Antilles created uncertainty among regional and international partners regarding the organization’s national identity and legal position. Therefore, in May 2024, the organization revised its name and logo and adopted the name Asosiashon di Guia Curaçao (AGC), internationally known as the Girl Guides Association of Curaçao.

This latest name change clearly affirms the organization’s identity as the national Girl Guides organization of Curaçao, while preserving its historical continuity. The Board subsequently also formally communicated this transition in connection with the organization’s statutory regularization.

95 Years of History

In 2025, the organization celebrated its 95th anniversary, counting from the first investment on 30 May 1930.

The history of the organization can therefore be summarized through four significant names:

• 1930 – Nederlandse Padvindsters Gilde (NPG)
• 1977 – Padvindsters Vereniging van de Nederlandse Antillen (PNA)
• 2010 – Asosiashon di Guia PNA (AGPNA)
• 2024 – Asosiashon di Guia Curaçao (AGC)

Although the organization’s name has changed over the years in response to organizational and constitutional developments, its core purpose has remained unchanged: to empower girls and young women through personal development, leadership, independence, service and active citizenship.
