Plastic Tide Turners

UNEP

Research shows that girls and young women (GYW) are disproportionately affected by climate change because of rights and power inequalities. GYW are also often omitted from climate change discourse despite the critical role they play in climate change responses due to their knowledge of environmentally sustainable practices. In light of this reality, our partnership goal is to enable girl led action on climate change by:

  1. increasing the awareness of climate related issues for girls and young women
  2. supporting direct adaptation and mitigation action at the community and national levels, and
  3. increasing the future capacity for women to take leadership roles in climate change response.

This is being accomplished through our non-formal education model that responds to the urgent need to educate and engage thousands of GYW in Africa and Asia in sustainable climate change action.

The WAGGGS – UNEP Project: Plastic Tide Turners Challenge (PTTC)

PTTC is a joint initiative with the United Nations Environment Programme Clean Seas initiative that educates girls and young women (GYW) based in 11 Member Organisations about plastic pollution, giving them the tools to change their personal behaviour, inspire their communities, and create a better future for people and planet. As part of the wider Youth & United Nations Global Alliance (YUNGA) UN Challenge badge series, GYW have been able to develop their leadership skills and make a positive impact on climate change, environmental issues and plastics pollution.

Currently, the project is in its final phase and has created a positive environmental impact in the following countries: Uganda, Madagascar, Pakistan, India, Ghana, Nigeria, The Gambia, Malaysia, Kenya, Zimbabwe and Cote d’Ivoire. The project to date has reached more than 10,000 GYW and enabled them to complete the challenge and earn their PTTC badge. The project has also supported over 1,000 Girl Guides and Girl Scouts to become Advocacy Champions after completion of an intensive advocacy training who then go on to mobilise other young changemakers to make positive contributions towards ending plastic pollution in their local communities, nationally and across the globe.
