In 2012 WAGGGS conducted several online surveys for current Girl Guides and Girl Scouts, adult leaders, alumnae and Member Organisations in order to assess the Impact of Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting on the lives of girls and young women around the world.
The evidence is clear – Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting helps create a world where girls and young women are valued and empowered to change the world. The Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting methodology combines a focus on non-formal education, volunteerism, youth participation and leadership development. This is in order to develop young women as leaders, grow their self-confidence and self-esteem, build skills in citizenship, and understand and take action on issues important to them.
The results of the report showed that, overall, WAGGGS initiatives are being used extensively and are encouraging young women to take action to change the world. For example, 81 per cent of the girls surveyed said they have a greater understanding of global issues than their peers due to their Girl Guiding or Girl Scouting experience. More than half of those surveyed said that Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting helped them work better in a team, feel more confident in taking the lead, feel more comfortable in trying new things, overcome difficult situations, and to speak out in public.
As one Girl Guide adult leader stated, ‘This is a great organization for young women and girls. As a teacher I like Girl Guides very much. It gives girls more opportunities to develop balanced personalities.’
In addition, it was found that Girl Guides and Girl Scouts are more likely to be proactive and take action on issues they care about, volunteer, and to see themselves as leaders. They influence others and inspire them to take action. Over 61 per cent of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts spend time volunteering outside of the Movement and take the lead in educating others by speaking out on global issues, encouraging others to take action and starting up initiatives on their own.
The full findings of the report can be found in Vision 2020- 2012 Evaluation Report Summary.
