Leadership Development Events

Empowering young women to become leaders is at the heart of what we do. We run two international leadership events for young women. These events are a platform for our members to connect with others, develop their practices and feel empowered to change the world.

Juliette Low Seminar

The Juliette Low Seminar (JLS) is WAGGGS’ flagship leadership development event for young women. JLS is traditionally held twice every three years. Since 1932 we have been providing this inter-cultural, inspirational and international experience, building friendship across borders and getting young women outside of their comfort zone! This event is all about empowering the next generation of leaders with the leadership practices and mindsets they need to succeed!

The Hub Model

In 2019 we will be piloting a new approach to the JLS. We intend to offer this opportunity to up to 1000 active members of Guiding and Scouting aged 20 – 30. We are planning to host multiple Juliette Low Seminar “hubs” in every Region at the same time, hosted by at the five World Centres as well as some Member Organisations. Each JLS event will be an international, cross-cultural leadership development experience. We will be taking the very best parts of JLS and making it bigger!

Keep checking our opportunities page as applications will open soon, and we will be releasing a list of the international locations in late 2019. If you have any questions you can reach the team at leadingforherworld@wagggs.org.

Our next JLS event will be 14 – 20 November 2019 and run as parallel events in multiple locations and languages for the first time!

Helen Storrow Seminar

Since 1986 we have offered the Helen Storrow Seminar to young women at Our Chalet, our World Centre based in Switzerland. This annual international event is a unique opportunity for leadership development as it addresses one of the most relevant issues in contemporary society - Environmental Sustainability. The seminar explores environmental issues of today and focuses on ways to raise awareness and use practical skills to create sustainable change. Attendees leave with a change plan ready to impact their environment at a local level.

The Pop-up model

35 – 40 participants join us in Switzerland for an intensive seven-day seminar of adventure and leadership practice. We then have groups from around the world interact and follow the session virtually; through webinars, video conferencing and an online sharing platform. The groups, known as ‘pop-ups’, connect with the main seminar and each other whilst following an adapted version of the Helen Storrow Seminar programme. These pop-up seminars can be held for any age group in any language. Pop-up events took place in 19 different countries in 2018 and reached a total of 600 members!

For over 80% of pop-up participants, this was their first international experience. Almost 90% of pop-up participants felt inspired to be more active in their Girl Guiding or Girl Scouting association.

Helen Storrow Seminar 2018
