About Us:

Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting is the world’s only movement for every girl and any girl because we believe that each of them deserves to be the best they can be. The World Association of Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting (WAGGGS) is the umbrella organisation for global Guiding and we represent 10 million girls in 152 countries. In safe, local spaces, girls develop the skills and attitudes to change themselves, their communities and our world.

About the Programme:

At WAGGGS, we enable young women to participate in and speak out at the highest global decision-making bodies. We provide them with their first powerful experiences of speaking out to shape their future and that of their community. In the last three years, more than 100 young women have attended key global events where they spoke side-by-side with Heads of States and key UN officials. They lobbied decision-makers on issues that they cared about, such as gender equality, and gender-based violence, nutrition, and girls' agency and empowerment, youth rights, non-formal education, and the environment and climate change.

Overview of Event:

Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) is the key global intergovernmental body exclusively dedicated to the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women. During its annual two-week session , representatives of UN Member States, civil society organizations and UN entities gather at UN headquarters in New York to discuss progress and commit to further action. The outcomes and recommendations of each session are forwarded to the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), the Commission’s parent body, for follow-up.

Every year a group of WAGGGS delegates (Advocacy Champions) attend the Commission on the Status of Women in the New York HQ (this year virtually). The Advocacy Champions attend and engage in the policy process, speaking opportunities, events and address the assembly to influence their Member States on key global issues impacting girls and young women.

About the role:

The consultant will be working closely with the Global Advocacy Manager, with the support of the Comms Manager, throughout the period of assignment. The consultant will also be working with delegates, who will be the main drivers of the social media campaign.

The outcomes for engaging at CSW is to raise visibility of girls and young women in key policy spaces and to effectively influence decision makers to the effect of achieving gender equality.

WAGGGS has been supporting delegates to attend CSW for a number of years and would like the expertise of a communications and campaigns specialist to increase and raise the visibility of WAGGGS and Advocacy Champions in this UN space.
