Applications Period Opens for 2013 G(irls)20 Summit in Russia
Summit to focus on jobs, growth and investment and how G-20 Leaders can economically empower the world’s greatest untapped resource: 3.5 billion girls and women
Applications are now being accepted for the 4th G(irls)20 Summit set to take place next June in Russia. The Summit is open to young women, 18-20 years of age from G-20 member countries, the European Union and the African Union. Applicants will be evaluated and chosen based on their vision of leadership, personal triumph and their ability to find innovative solutions to economic challenges.
Modeled after the G-20, the G(irls)20 Summit brings together one girl from each G-20 country and one girl from the African Union on an annual basis just prior to the G-20 Leaders meeting. This GLOBAL meeting has an agenda that is similar to that of the G-20 Leaders, however, the participants are emerging leaders, girls aged 18-20 years. Delegates discuss the very issues the G-20 Leaders are discussing but do it with a different lens: how do we economically empower girls and women globally so they can contribute to the economic growth and social stability of their communities and countries.
At the end of 10 days, through workshops and debate, the delegates are equipped with new skills including: media and communications, business planning, leadership, technical knowledge, etc. The Summit culminates in a communiqué and a delegate-led press conference that provides the G-20 leaders with innovative solutions to global challenges. The delegates return home and put their ideas into action by starting their own initiative to empower girls and women or supporting an already existing program / partner. Three Summits have taken place to date – Toronto (2010), Paris (2011) and Mexico City (May 2012).
