The 'Building Peace among Children' project created a network of peace ambassadors to work with refugees in Rwanda and other countries in the region. At the time, the country was still recovering from the genocide which took place in 1994 leading to the displacement of many communities and families.
On 10 December 2001, Irmell Torssonen, the President of Soroptimist International, led an appeal for women to become 'Peace Ambassadors' who were trained so that they could return to their villages and run seminars of their own. The appeal raised £100,000 and 'Building Peace among Children' emerged as the first joint project between WAGGGS and the Soroptimists.
