In 2011 the World
Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) and online
security experts Symantec, partnered together to produce the internet
safety curriculum ‘Surf Smart’. In May 2016, the total programme surpassed 281,000 children globally.
In Europe over 51,000 people have completed the programme. Surf Smart has proven popular with our Member Organizations and was voted curriculum of the year by the Scouts et Guides de France in 2012. Overall 99 per cent of beneficiaries in Europe believed they had gained new knowledge, skills or both through the completion of the course and the demand for course materials has outstripped supply.
Following up on this success, the programme was rolled out in Latin America and India from 2015-16. For this, the third phase of the partnership, aimed to reach at least 60,000 people and update and adapt the programme into Spanish, Portuguese, Hindi, Kanada, Odia, Tamil and Marathi. These materials are available now to all our members and member organisations to ensure that the curriculum can reach as many people as possible. The map below provides details of where the programme has been used so far.
This
project has been made possible in part by a grant from the Symantec Foundation,
a corporate advised fund of Silicon Valley Community Foundation.
