Delegates COP 17The day began with a bright morning sun, which was a great start to the day. We spent the morning at the Durban Botanical Gardens where we were taken through a short course about permaculture. Permaculture is a sustainable way of producing food and literally means “permanent agriculture”. We learned the steps for making a permaculture garden and the reasons why there is a need for making home gardens. Two of our delegates, Megan and Bronwyn, had their first pre-conference interview with reporters today at the Gardens. Way to promote Guiding ladies!

Later in the day, we went to the Girl Guide Hall in the coastal region of Kwo Zulu Natal. We put into practice what we learned at the Botanical Gardens by planting our own garden at the Guide Hall. Four Guides helped us through the steps as they are young permaculture gardeners themselves! The Chief Commissioner for Guiding in South Africa was there to join in. Our fearless leader Bernadette arrived just in time to help spread the manure! After getting our hands (and feet!) a little dirty, we headed back to the Guide Camp we are staying at, Fairfell, to continue working on our action plans for our environmental projects we are conducting in our home countries. We presented our projects on camera to help prep ourselves for all the wonderful interviews we have in store for us.

A big accomplishment for the day was completing the mural we started on the wall of the office building at Fairfell. It looks great and shows the wonderful diversity of our delegates and has environmental messages! We had a great time finishing up the wall by stamping our footprints on it with the flags of our countries on it.

It was a great day and we look forward to many more!
