Wednesday 5 June 203 is World Environment Day. The theme this year is: Think.Eat.Save.
Our partner, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) say that every year 1.3 billion tonnes of food is wasted. This is equivalent to the same amount produced in the whole of sub-Saharan Africa! At the same time, 1 in every 7 people in the world go to bed hungry and more than 20,000 children under the age of 5 die daily from hunger.
We have been working with FAO and the Youth and UN Global Alliance (YUNGA) on a new Challenge Badge all about Ending Hunger. It isn’t quite finished yet but keep an eye on the WAGGGS website over the next few weeks. In the meantime, here are a few activities from the Ending Hunger Badge to help you celebrate World Environment Day.
Actvities from the Ending Hunger Badge
Activity 1 - Food Waste
Write down how much food your family throws away everyday for one week. At the end of the week, calculate your total food waste. Discuss how you could try to reduce it in the following weeks, and put these suggestions into practice! Explain to your family why it is important not to throw food away.
Activity 2 - Play for Food!
If you have an internet connection at home or somewhere else, take some time to try some charity games: http://www.wfp.org/students-and-teachers/students/fun-and-learn. In these games, whenever you win, you donate food to the hungry!
Activity 3 - Gender and Hunger
Do some research and find out in which countries gender inequality is still significant and hard to overcome. Why is it such a big issue in these countries? How does this compare to the gender situation in your country? Make up a series of sketches between men and women or boys and girls that start with the same situation (e.g a woman farmer trying to sell her produce) but end differently depending on the community in which they take place. Perform them for your friends and family.
Activity 4 - A Dollar a Day
Find out how much 1 US dollar is in your currency. Imagine earning this amount each day; what can you buy with it? Write a shopping list of ingredients that will allow you to prepare healthy and balanced meals for one person for a whole day - so that is at least three meals (plus two optional snacks). Go to the shop or market and check the prices; is it possible to buy everything on your list with just one dollar? Which items will you have to sacrafice? Just imagine what would happen if you had to provide food for a whole family and you still only earned one dollar every day. Write a list of what you would like to buy. How much more money would you need to buy all the items on your list? How could you find this money? Or are there other ways to obtain the food? Think about these questions and discuss your observations and ideas with your group.
