On 5 December 2011, we will once again commemorate International Volunteer Day and celebrate the invaluable contributions of Girl Guide and Girl Scout volunteers around the world. WAGGGS calls on Girl Guide and Girl Scout volunteers to take part in a special activity in recognition of International Volunteer Day.
Bringing together the European Year of Volunteering and the tenth anniversary of the UN International Year of Volunteering, 2011 has been a unique opportunity to highlight different aspects of volunteering globally. This year, International Volunteer Day will recognise the contribution of volunteers and volunteer organizations to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals - and you can get involved too!
Every week between now and 5 December, there will be a different video and question on the Volunteering Matters website. WAGGGS invites Girl Guides and Girl Scouts to take part by watching the video and answering the question by uploading an appropriate photo and caption to the website. You can show how volunteering helps to “light up our world” by sending photos and testimonies of your volunteer activities until 6 December. A “digital snapshot” of our volunteering world will be revealed on 7 December. This is your chance to showcase the amazing work you do.
On 5 December UN Volunteers will launch the first-ever State of the World’s Volunteerism Report and UN member states will discuss volunteerism at a special session of the UN General Assembly. Between now and 5 December, make sure you contribute to the weekly discussions and let them know what you think.
