Day 1 - Journey to Leadership Opening Ceremony - Burundi

The Europe-Africa Journey to Leadership seminar was officially launched last night in Bujumbura, Burundi.
Participants, facilitators, guests and representatives from diplomatic corps and international partners of the Burundian Girl Guides were in attendance for the opening ceremony and were treated to the beautiful sound of the Burundian drummers playing traditional songs. Mme Justine Nkurunziza, The Chief Commissioner of the Burundian Girl Guides, welcomed the 29 participants who had travelled to Burundi from 25 countries.
The Chair of the WAGGGS Europe Region, Lara Tonna, welcomed the participants, providing an overview of the objectives of the seminar and of the project that it seeks to support. She also graciously read the greetings of the Chair of the WAGGGS World Board, Nadine El Achy, who wished the participants and facilitators a fruitful week of learning, exchange and action planning.
The Ministry of Youth, Sport and Culture of the Burundian Republic, Jean Jacques Nyenemigabo, officially opened the seminar, praising the continuous efforts of the Girl Guides Association of Burundi as well as welcoming all the participants on behalf of the Burundian Government.
Over the next 5 days the leadership programme will provide participants with opportunities to strengthen their leadership skills, learn more about gender equality issues in their respective countries, discuss the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and their practical application and achievement in their local communities, as well as visits to local projects and much more!
