Global White Band Day on 17 October

Este texto no ha sido traducido todavía

Wear a white band on 17 October to support the Global Call for Action against Poverty (GCAP). Throughout 2005, 30 million activities took place around the world as a part of the campaign to put pressure on politicians and world leaders to enforce their effort to reach the UN’s Millennium Development Goals by 2015.
Girl Guides and Girl Scouts who wear the white band on 17 October will not only be supporting the campaign against poverty, but will also be supporting WAGGGS’ advocacy work on adolescent health. Poverty puts the health of girls and young women at risk. Poverty causes malnutrition, contributes to drug abuse and increases the risk of HIV/AIDS infection.
The Global White band Day is organized by the Global Call to Action against Poverty. It is the grand finale for the month of mobilization from 16 September to 17 October.  Find out more about the month of mobilization.

The 17 October was chosen as date for the 4th Global White Band Day because it is the UN’s International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.  This day was the fruit of an initiative led by ATD Fourth World, an international NGO which was founded in 1957 in a camp for homeless families in France. Have a look at the list of events taking place around the world to mark this day.

What are you doing?

The great thing about the white band is that it can be used easily by anyone in the world, whatever their circumstances. You can make your own white band to mark the day. Use a piece of fabric or paper and wear it any way you like: as a wristband, an armband, a headband, or a lapel badge.
