Yemen - Help improve literacy of girls and young women

Illiteracy is a problem facing Yemeni women with a rate that has reached about 80% partically in rural areas. Many of the girls are not enrolled in school or are unable to complete their education and remain illiterate. The lack of schools for girls in rural areas, as well as the lack of teachers, has led to this lack of enrolment.

Through an education programme set up with the approval of the Ministry for Education, the Yemen Girl Guides Association hope to improve the literacy of 1000 girls and women in five governorates by 85% in rural areas and 15% in urban areas during a three years period. The Association was seeking funds in order to implement this programme.

This project has been generously funded by Girlguiding UK.
