GAT Badge
WAGGGS’ Global Action Theme (GAT) is girls worldwide say “together we can change our world” which focuses on the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to end extreme poverty by 2015. The theme encourages girls, young women and members of all ages to make a personal commitment to change the world around them.
The GAT Badge is an activity pack with over 100 exciting and informative activities. To earn a badge, complete six, eight or twelve activities. You can purchase fabric badges from Our Shop.
Age range: 5 years to 24 years
Examples of activities:
- Make up this home-made recipe for oral rehydration solution, which is given to children suffering from dehydration, and give a small amount to the rest of the group to taste: Mix 1 teaspoon of salt, 8 teaspoons of sugar and 1 litre of clean water together until the salt and sugar is completely dissolved.
- Monitor the amount of packaging that comes into your home in one week. Count how many types of packaging and what materials it is made from. How much of this packaging can be recycled? What can be done to reduce the amount of packaging? Discuss with your group ways to improve the situation.
Sample facts about education and empowerment of girls and womenEducation is really important to help deal with poverty. When people have the chance to learn basic life and literacy skills, economies grow faster and poverty rates go down. When people go to school, they are able to eventually earn more money and support their families. The goal of gender equality and the empowerment of women is a cross-cutting issue important to the achievement of all the MDGs. For example, in many African countries, women aged 15-49 are 50% more likely to be infected with HIV than men of the same age. |
