Adolescent Health
WAGGGS has always been involved in projects which involve the health of adolescents. One of Lord Baden Powell’s, the Founder of Scouting and Guiding, earliest concerns was that young people should know how to live healthily and eat healthily. WAGGGS continues with these very important issues today. The World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts’ adolescent health campaign focuses on issues of concern affecting today’s girls and young women, such as HIV and AIDS, adolescent pregnancy and adolescent health. In this section, you can find out more about our pioneering work on HIV and AIDS prevention and our initiative on the prevention of adolescent pregnancy.
In the WAGGGS’ survey on adolescent health, of the 6,000 girls surveyed, 37 per cent considered HIV/AIDS to be the key issue for WAGGGS to talk to world leaders about, and 24 per cent considered adolescent pregnancy to be the most important topic. Sexually transmitted diseases (22 per cent) and eating disorders (17 per cent) were also considered important.
