Friends of Asia Pacific WAGGGS 4th General Assembly held in Chiangmai

23 April 2014

The Friends of Asia Pacific WAGGGS (FAPW) 4th General Assembly was held in Chiangmai from 16 to 20 January 2014. The FAPW General Assembly is held once every three years. Below is an article of the General Assembly from the FAPW Working Group.

FAPW 4th General Assembly 2014 - 002Our wonderful hosts, Girl Guides (Girl Scouts) of Thailand and the Girl Guides of Chiang Mai ensured that this was a most happy and memorable event. In a day at the Rai Choen Bamphen Campsite we learned about the programs run for the girls and what has been achieved in the building and development of the campsite, through dedication, hard work, careful financing and the great work ethic of the volunteers and employees alike. Through a variety of cultural activities which included visits to temples, Thai dance performances, parks, orchid gardens, a hand weaving institute, the Celadon factory, handicrafts centres and an umbrella making centre, we gained a deeper understanding of Lanna History and Culture. We all had a delightful surprise on a visit to the elephant show, when one of the elephants painted a World Trefoil which was later auctioned for 19,000 Thai baht!

FAPW 4th General Assembly 2014 - 004At the first Business meeting, a Presentation by the AP Committee and the Working Group brought us up to date on membership, 3L and 30% Membership projects and FAPW events throughout the Region, fundraising targets and progress, expenditure to date and the achievements and future plans of the Working Groups. Future events include a gathering to run concurrently with the World Conference and an OB-PS event in Hong Kong in July and a gathering in Melbourne, Australia, at the same time as the AP Conference for Leaders of Girls, in November and December. The 5th General Assembly will be held in Brunei Darussalam in 2017. More information on these events will follow as soon as it is available.

FAPW 4th General Assembly 2014 - 001During the second Business Meeting, three new members were elected to the Working Group. The new members are Lee Fook Tai Peggy (Hong Kong), Normala Binti Baharudin (Malaysia) and Sun Kyo Jung (Korea). The three continuing members are Susan Locsin (Philippines) who was elected Chairman, Helen Hargreaves (Australia) who was elected Vice Chairman and Junko Sato (Japan). The Working Group is pictured here with Dato Dr Juseon Byun.
