Rest In Peace Nelson Mandela

6 December 2013

GIRL GUIDES South Africa wishes to add their collective voice to tributes from around the world, in sending their condolences to the Mandela family, South Africa and indeed the world on this very sad day.

Nelson Mandela was chosen as the first recipient of the World Citizen Award presented by the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) for his extraordinary courage and commitment to the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa. This award was launched in 1996, and is given to people outside the Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting movement who have made an outstanding contribution to the building of a better world, been a role model for young people and used her or his position to work towards bringing people together across political, religious, economic or social divides.  Madiba was indeed a worthy recipient.

GIRL GUIDES South Africa contributes significantly in guiding girls towards a confident future and in doing so interfaces with Madiba’s ideals.  Mandela said:  “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.  It can contribute to nation-building and reconciliation.”  Girl Guiding’s platform offers informal educational programmes based on strong moral values and provides a crucial tool to empower girls and women.  Madiba referred to a country that ensures a bright future as one that takes care of the young and as GIRL GUIDES South Africa we are about developing the potential of young people.

This great man is one who we have known and learnt to love and appreciate.

Madiba; may you rest in peace and may the rest of the world learn from your tolerance and humanity towards all others.
