Help us celebrate International Youth Day!
12 August 2013
In 1999, the United Nations General Assembly declared that 12 August will be International Youth Day. Every year since, the day has brought awareness to the issues which affect youth worldwide. In 2013 the theme is ‘Youth Migration: Moving Development Forward.’
There are many reasons why youth find themselves in positions to move from their homes – with some of the main reasons including fleeing persecution, escaping economic hardship, youth unemployment, and armed conflict. These young migrants then face many hardships in their new areas such as racism, xenophobia, discrimination and human rights violations.
In October 2013, the United Nations General Assembly will host the 2nd High Level Dialogue on International Migration and Development, and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon will discuss and encourage members to consider youth migration.
‘On this International Youth Day, I encourage all Member States, youth-led organizations and other stakeholders to act to promote the rights of all young migrants and maximize the development potential of youth migration.’ – Ban Ki-Moon
Today between 10:00-1:30 EST a celebration of International Youth Day will take place at the UN headquarters in New York. The event is organized by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), in partnership with the International Labour Organization (ILO) with support from the MDG Achievement Fund. The programme will feature a panel discussion with testimony from young migrants, the announcement and presentation of the award winning video of the ILO youth migration video contest, and updates from three reports being released by the ILO, DESA and Global Migration group. The UN World Youth Report will also come out today and can be found here.
