Stand up against poverty

1 October 2006

Girl Guides and Girls Scouts around the world are called to join the world record attempt to Stand Up Against Poverty on 15 and 16 October 2006.

The UN Millennium Campaign launched this global initiative to set a world record by mobilizing the most number of people to physically and intentionally stand up against poverty and for the Millennium Development Goals in a 24 hour period.

Six years ago, 189 world leaders committed to end poverty and achieve the Millennium Development Goals by 2015. Now people across the world will stand up to remind them of this promise. This world record attempt is part of the month of mobilization organized to the Global Call for Action Against Poverty.

They did it

Members of the Turkish Guiding and Scouting Federation took fast action after receiving the call to Stand Up Against Poverty.

“We produced an instruction sheet how to make a Stand-up event and a poster to make aware Guides, Scouts and responsible groups of people, sporting clubs and NGO’s. On 1 October the STAND UP campaign was introduced at the monthly Guides and Scouts leaders meeting with a of STAND UP exhibition, the booklet and posters,” explains Umit Savas, the International Commissioner.
