Ten ways to promote Peace on International Peace Day

1. Make Pinwheels for Peace.  Join students around the world making pinwheels and put them on display to promote peace on earth. You can find directions for the Pinwheel on this website.

2. Ring the Peace Bell. Each year at the UN headquarters the peace bell rings three times on peace day. Ring your own peace bell in public or listen together with others to the UN peace bell on line (you will need RealPlayer).

3. Pray for peace. Invite your community to join together for a prayer or meditation for peace on earth. The prayer ’May peace prevail on earth’ has been translated into more than 80 languages.

4. Declare the Right to Peace. Read the UN declaration on the right to peace and hold a public discussion, speakers corner or an opinion poll about it. You can download the UN declaration.

5. Hold one minute silence. Join thousands of people throughout the world to hold one minute of silence. Invite your friends, family, Girl Guide/Girl Scout troop or schoolmates and go to a public place so others can join you as well.

6. Fundraise for peace. Decorate a box with peace doves and collect coins for peace to support WAGGGS activities. Download the description for the box. You can combine your fundraiser with another peace activity to raise public awareness. This is how you can submit your donation to WAGGGS.

7. Sign the AFS Peace Petition. AFS Intercultural Programs invite everyone to sign the “Petition for a Global Expansion of Educational Youth Exchange Programs” on their website. Intercultural exchange supports peace because it enables young people to understand other cultures and extend the hand of friendship across borders. WAGGGS is a supporter of this campaign.

8. Light a peace flame. During your Girl Guide/Girl Scout troop meeting light a candle or lantern to commemorate world peace during your meeting. Suggest doing the same at your school, university, work place, etc.

9. Make a peace dove. Produce as many paper doves as you can and give them to people to remind them of International Peace Day.

10. Sing for peace. Sing a peace song and try to get as many people as possible to join in. Prepare leaflets with the lyrics so people can easily sing along. You can download the lyrics and music for a song for peace.
