Today’s girls are tomorrow’s future

WAGGGS is a major supporter of International Women’s Day, held on 8 March, which celebrates the achievements of women around the world. This day is observed globally through a range of events in acknowledgment of the contribution women make at all levels of society.

This year we want to remind the world that every girl and young woman has the right to achieve her potential.

As part of our International Women’s Day activities, WAGGGS’ newly appointed CEO, Mary Mc Phail spoke on the topic of “Today’s girls, tomorrow’s future” at the UK’s Aurora network celebrations.

Today’s girls are tomorrow’s future, and it is our responsibility to equip them to be tomorrow’s leaders. WAGGGS provides girls in 144 member countries with leadership and life skills through self-development, challenge and adventure.

International Women’s Day provides us with an opportunity to honour and celebrate the achievements of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts from all over the world.

Girl Guides and Girl Scouts achieve

Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting empowers girls and young women to aim high. All around the world you can find former Girl Guides and Girl Scouts who have used their skills and experience to excel in different areas. Actress Emma Thompson and singer Björk are two examples of this. Read their amazing stories.

You can also read about the impact of Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting on the lives of five young women, one from each region.

What about you?

We would like you to share your Guiding story with the world. We would like you to tell others about great women you know in Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting. Use the comment section below to tell everybody about a Girl Guide or Girl Scout that has inspired you or write about your personal Guiding story.

You can also put your name on our database of young women. Young women on this database will be kept up to date about WAGGGS’ activities, you will be asked to take part in discussions and you may be asked to represent WAGGGS at events.

I have been a member of WAGGGS for the past 15 years (I am only 20) and have cherished every minute. Through Guiding I have found strength and been able to come out of my shell.
Today I am a Brownies leader and love it. It is so amazing to see the difference that this orginization makes to those little girls. The pride that they have developed as young women and their joy over the endless possiblities over the future is overwellming.
I can't say enough about this orginization. I can't imagine a better mold for the women of tomorrow.

Many years ago, I became a "Lifetime Girl Scout". I enjoyed scouting as a young girl, and felt like, even though I may not be able to be as active as I like during my peak career years, I still wanted to be associated with Girl Scouting. I was honored to have the Girl Scouts as one of my clients for a few years! I believe Girl Scouts and Girl Guides are a critical part of nurturing our young women. Leadership positions in scouting have prepared many women for careers in both for-profit and not-for-profit sectors. Scouting continues to be relevant for many girls and even more women!

Dear friends,
We strongly believe in our organization that today's girls are tomorrow's future. Infact,we have our statement in our organization that today's empowered girl or daughter is tomorrow's empowered mother and mother means creator who gives strong foundation to a child for his/her future. If her foundation is weak. She will not be able to give strong foundation to her child and family. Our government in India(South Asia) are running few programmes for women empowerment but we believe that it is too late to address her needs or do something to empower her. By the time she becomes women her ideas are fixed, it is difficult to change her mind and attitude. The Adolescent age is the right age and time to sharpen their minds and attitude towards her advancement and empowerment. So we strongly believe that adolescent age of women is the right age to have certain interventions to guide them for better life. Therefore,we have formed adolescent girls groups in rural areas of our State Uttarakhand, North India and we are working with adolescent girls group to make them confident girls to excercise their power and rights towards gender equality and better life in the society. We need guidance and support from your prestigious organisation to help and guide girls from the weaker section of the society.
