Global Climate Change awareness action

YOUR ACTION OPTIONS

Choose one or more to help raise awareness on Climate Change
on Young and Future Generation (YoFuGe) Day 1 December 2011

Hello Climate Activists around the world!

Thank you for joining Girl Guides and Girl Scouts worldwide to raise awareness on climate change. The WAGGGS youth delegation to the UN Climate Change Conference COP 17 has prepared a set of suggested actions and you can choose one or more to join this global campaign. Each suggestion also includes some ideas for messages that you can put on t-shirts, banners or posters to make it very clear what your action is about. Have a look and choose what you like best.

On 1 December the UN Climate Change Conference COP 17 in Durban, South Africa, will celebrate Young and Future Generation Day. On this day the WAGGGS youth delegation will run the action at the conference and we invite everybody around the world to join in.

Can't do it on 1 December? Well, about a week before or afterwards is fine.

Please please please send us a photo or video of your action. Email the photo or a link where we can download the video to comms@wagggsworld.org

ACTION OPTION 1 - Freeze!

This action aims to get people to stop and pay attention to the problems caused by climate change.

This works best in a busy place. Your group mixes with the crowd, for example in a shopping centre or in a school courtyard. On a secret signal that you have agreed everybody 'freezes'. This means you stop and stand still in whatever position you were in. For instance, some people pretending to be walking and some pretending to be running all in a freeze position. Stay 'frozen' for 350 seconds, and make sure you have banners or posters or t-shirts that carry a very clear message what is going on here. 350 seconds is the suggested time because 350 parts per million is what many scientists, climate experts, and progressive national governments are now saying is the safe upper limit for CO2 in our atmosphere. Find out more at www.350.org

Suggested messages

  • Climate Change - we are part of the solution
  • Climate Change - stop waiting start acting
  • Climate Change will not stop without action
  • Freeze the CO2 limits at 350ppm
  • Climate Change doesn’t stop
  • Stop - we need to talk about Climate Change
  • Stop - there is a problem with our climate
  • Freeze if you care about the globe
  • We can save our planet
  • Any other ideas? Go ahead!

ACTION OPTION 2 -Wake up call

This action aims to call everyone to wake up and take action to tackle climate change.

This action works better in the morning, for example on the bus to school, but will make a great impact at any time of the day. The group sets their mobile phone alarms or alarm clocks to go off all at the same time. Five minutes or so before the alarm goes off everybody is sitting around pretending to sleep. When the phones go off everybody wakes up with a big dramatized stretch and starts looking around as if they just realized what is happening and start saying to each other something along the lines of 'we can't ignore the alarm' or 'we need to wake up and take action before it will be too late'. To make a strong impact, it would be good if every phone has the same alarm tone. If you don’t have mobile phones, just bring alarm clocks instead. When you 'wake up' pull out your banners or posters or t-shirts that carry a very clear message what is going on here.

Suggested messages:

  • It´s time to a wake up and take action against climate change
  • Climate Change - we are part of the solution
  • Climate Change - stop waiting start acting
  • Ring ring - global warming here
  • Wake up to climate change
  • We can save our planet
  • Maybe you can also use a picture of a ringing alarm clock with your message?
  • Any other ideas? Go ahead!

ACTION OPTION 3 - Climate Cha Cha Slide

The aim of this activity is to pass on the message with a really cool dance and song. Watch this video to learn the Climate Cha Cha Slide:

Make sure you have t-shirts, posters or banners with very clear messages with you so people understand better what this is all about.

COP 16 - Delegats singing the climate action song

Here are the lyrics:

  • Clap clap clap clap your hands
  • Clap clap clap clap your hands
  • Take a stand now y’all
  • 1 degree at a time
  • Right foot let’s act
  • Left foot let’s act
  • Climate change reverse
  • Turn it down
  • Switch off those lights
  • Time to go green
  • Right foot let’s act
  • Left foot let’s act
  • Hands on your knees
  • Save those trees
  • FREEZE
  • Everybody make a change

Suggested messages:

  • Climate action is cool
  • We are taking action against climate change
  • Girls can save the planet
  • We can save our planet
  • Climate Change - be part of the solution
  • Get a move on - Climate Change doesn’t stop
