Global Action Theme (GAT)

WAGGGS’ Global Action Theme (GAT) is girls worldwide say “together we can change our world,” which focuses on the eight United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The GAT replaced Our Rights, Our Responsibilities as the WAGGGS theme from 2009 onwards.

This educational programme encourages girls, young women and members of all ages to make a personal commitment to change the world around them. It also affirms WAGGGS’ commitment to help achieve the MDGs.

Take Action

GAT poverty badge goldsm.jpgWAGGGS encourages everyone to take action and change the world around them. Action can happen at many levels. ‘Our world’ starts at a personal level, and expands to include our local community, national and international levels.

The GAT Badge curriculum is an exciting way for Girl Guides and Girl Scouts to learn about all the MDG topics and take action on the issues that affect them and their communities. The curriculum contains over 100 non-formal education activities and easy-to-understand explanations of the MDGs. Since its launch in May 2009 in English, French and Spanish, the badge curriculum has also been translated into other languages such as Russian, Greek and Italian.

GAT Champions lead the way

GAT Champions, Member Organizations that are ‘championing’ the GAT, have already implemented several MDG related projects. They are encouraging and supporting other MOs to get involved in this exciting and vital programme.

“The MDGs are the principal line of action for most of the national institutions, including NGOs, so we can have big impact by making programmes in co-operation with them for girls and women.” Kiriam Melany Nuila Bonilla (GAT Champion - Asociación De Muchachas Guías Scouts de El Salvador)
