Young Women's World Forum - Day 1

YWWF 2010- 19 OctoberTuesday has been a busy day at Heythrop Park in Oxfordshire, UK, home for the week of the Young Women’s World Forum 2010. Delegates, aged 18-25, have been arriving from all over the world. Everyone has been getting settled in to the venue, set in the English countryside, and preparing themselves for an action-packed week ahead.

The Forum will focus on three of the Millenium Development Goals (MDGs), Ending Poverty, Gender Equality and Environment, which were voted for by WAGGGS members worldwide. Participants have been getting to know each other in preparation for a series of talks, discussions and workshops throughout the week. These sessions will allow delegates to draw up a list of recommendations for WAGGGS, Governments and Civil Society as well as create their own personal action plan to effect change within their organisation and their community; an amazing opportunity for WAGGGS members to get their voices heard on a global scale!

YWWF 2010- 20 OctoberEveryone at the Forum is eagerly anticipating the opening plenary on Wednesday when the Forum will be joined by Jo Swinson MP, who at the time of her election in 2005 was the youngest MP in the House of Commons. The theme for the day is “Explore” and delegates will have the opportunity to learn about the MDGs from a variety of charity partners including Oxfam, Save the Children and Water Aid.

Greetings from Australia to all the delegates, especially Emma and Amy from Australia, but also those from other countries who I have been lucky enough to meet in the past. As I am sure you are all discovering, international Guiding is a magical experience, and I am sure you will all leave the YWWF with new friends from every corner of the World.
