Approaches to leadership

We started off our day with some reflections from the previous day activities, quite refreshing and marvellous! Our first session was on ‘you’ as a WAGGGS leaders. We carried out an exercise using cut out pieces of a flipchart and laid them on the ground.

Participants brainstormed on what bond exists between:

  1. Leader and team
  2. Leader and vision
  3. Leader and influence
  4. Leader and change
  5. Leader and followers

‘Are you a leader! Would you like to understand what type of a leader you are to you community?’ Take a few minutes of your time and access yourself.
Our morning session ended with an exercise on putting puzzles together. This exercise was to access leadership roles and communication skills with a team. Some patrols were given puzzles with a picture to guide them but without talking to each other and other patrols were given puzzles without pictures to guide them but were allowed to talk.

Who do you think completed the puzzle quickly?

Opening ceremony

Our second session was the official opening ceremony for the JLS. We met the Chief Commissioner of the Kenya Girl Guides Association (KGGA) and Honorine Kiplagat, one of KGGA Trustees, and many others who are involved in the Girl Guides and Scout Movement. Persons present were the Ambassador of the USA in Kenya, WAGGGS Deputy Chair, Permanent Secretary Youth affairs and Sports and Kenya Scout Association representatives.

We had a flag ceremony to honour the different countries attending the JLS. Everything was good because nations were brought together and are now representing the voice of many girls around the world.

After the ceremony we started our afternoon session on personal development. We explored our roles and characteristics we have for he different roles we play. Then we found out how these characteristics match the eight principals of leadership. There was also a session on self esteem.

Key learnings for this session

  • I own me, therefore I can do anything
  • I am me and I am ok
In the afternoon we started another session with a game for the leader We divided into our various patrols and choose a leader, then the leader would go and receive instructions from the facilitators went back and gave us the real feeling of being a leader with a vision and sharing it with the patrol. We then shared the theories of leadership.

Key learnings for this session

  • To lead others I need to lead myself and in order to lead myself I need to know myself.
Leadership may be of any style but leaders should be able to communicate appropriately with their team.

For the evening session we watched a powerful film about the civil war in Liberia. The film demonstrated how women played a key role in restoring peace to Liberia.
